How do you know that
God approves the decisions you make. Should you stop each time you have to make a decision and seek God’s approval?
No.
God has endowed you with the
capacity to make sensible day-to-day decisions. For example, the colour dress or shirt you wear usually has no life changing
consequences. You were thought how to make low impact decisions as part of the process of growing up. Parents, teachers
and adults all help you build these skills. However there are times when greater care is required due to the outcome
or impact of your decision.
Guideline for making serious or life impacting
decisions
1. Categorize the problem. “Don’t waste $100.00 in energy on a $1.00 problem”. What defines a serious
decision? Any decision that will have a significant impact on your mental, physical or spiritual well-being. Physical well
being could mean your own body or that of a loved one, your finances or possessions. – Luke 10:38 - 42
2. Do not make serious decisions when you are angry, hurt, depressed, desperate, or frightened.
3. Do not make serious decisions when you are on an emotional high. E.g – After receiving a significant gift, being
told something very flattering by someone you like or admire. Remember what happened to Samson while lying in the lap of Delilah
and Herodias’ daughter asking for John the Baptist’s head (Mark 6: 21 – 26)
4. Do not make serious decisions just to get revenge or to harm someone else.
5. Do not make serious decisions on sentiment alone.
6. Ask God for wisdom. James 1: 5
7. Base your decision on your:
Values
Medium to long-term
life goals
8. Seek input from mature persons with knowledge or experience.
9. Pray, pray and pray some more. Dependent on the severity of the issue, seek direction from God through prayer and fast.
10. Be determined with
your decision. Do not be double minded – James 1:8
